  1. In Past Tense is our series of articles in which GSMArena veterans take you on a nostalgia-infused ride through the years. Hi, I'm Paul, the veteran here at GSMArena Towers and my journey takes us on a slightly longer track when compared to previous installments in this series. Before owning my first mobile phone I had access to one through the UK company I worked for, and I've racked my brains, but for the life of me, I can't remember what make or model it was. What I do remember though is pranking my friends, I used to call them up while stood outside their house, pretending I was at... View the full article
  2. When asked to pick between the two new Samsung flagships - the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ - you, our readers, didn't hesitate to go with the Plus model. Interestingly, the larger size of the handset was not quoted as a positive, quite the opposite in fact. People want the S9+ for its telephoto camera, larger battery and 2GB extra of RAM. Now, if Samsung could fit that in Galaxy S9's body, we have a suspicion that the voting will quickly swing in favor of the smaller handset. Transferring all those features to the S9 would, naturally, bump its price up closer to the S9+. And a few were... View the full article
  3. Ivan: The notch gives character. When the Apple iPhone X came out in the Fall of last year we were split on "The Notch" and the controversy hasn't stopped ever since. I'm pretty sure most people (along with my colleague at the opposite end of this argument) find the notch ugly and pointless. But I find it kind of attractive, weird as that may sound to most people. It gives the iPhone X a character of its own, a face even. It's an iconic design already, much like the round home button was. I've subsequently bought an iPhone X and I've not once found the notch a hindrance.... View the full article
  4. Samsung's offering some serious discounts on accessories for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in the US with two bundles in particular that bring massive savings - provided, of course, you actually need said accessories. The 'S9 Ultimate bundle' is priced at $99 and includes the Fast Charge Wireless Charging Stand 2018 (MSRP $69.99), the Gear IconX wireless earbuds in black ($199.99), and the latest GearVR headset ($129.99) - a total of $400 worth of accessories (though we're not sure anyone's ever bought those at full retail). Galaxy S9+ standard retail package (hint: the S9's the... View the full article
  5. We wrote about the open pre-orders of the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact in Europe last week, but those were third-party retailers' offers. Sony's launched its own pre-orders, with freebies and... you got the hint. A couple of Xperia XZ2s with assorted cases The pre-order offers aren't available in all countries where Sony has a presence, and even where they are, they vary by country. For example, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the UK are getting the Wireless Charging Dock & Style Cover Touch with XZ2 pre-orders. In the UK, if you go for the Compact, it'll be just the Style Cover Touch... View the full article
  6. Oppo is gearing up for an action-packed end of March. After the scheduled announcement of the F7 on March 26, the company's now revealed that the R15 is coming by the end of the month too too (likely an R15 Plus as well) - five days later on March 31. Oppo R15 event posters The R15 will be unveiled at a televised event, scheduled to start at 8 p.m. local time. Chinese actor Zhang Yishan will be on board as brand ambassador, for those familiar with the country's sitcom scene. Meanwhile, details have emerged on the R15's primary camera, only mentioned in a previous specs leak... View the full article
  7. Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact review

It's once again peak smartphone season and Sony is next to join the annual spring race. But while others do regular and plus-size models, Sony, as usual, is going towards the other end of the spectrum with the new Xperia XZ2 Compact. View the full article
  8. LG will reportedly opt for an LCD panel for the upcoming G6 successor, Korean market analysts predict. It will be a measure aimed at keeping costs in check as OLED displays, their advantages aside, can be two to three times as expensive as comparable LCDs. P-OLED LG V30 (left) next to LCD LG G6 That said, LG's G-series smartphones have traditionally been equipped with LCDs anyway, so it's hardly a surprise that the G7 (which in all likelihood will not be called that) won't use an OLED either. Speculations were fuelled by the adoption of OLED for the V30, and the notched renders of... View the full article
  9. Google Home is not yet available in Italy, but that might happen soon as the support for Italian language has arrived on the smart speaker. With this, the Home now supports a total of nine different languages. Those who tested the new language support confirmed the device was able to recognize different voices. However, controls for home automation, routines, and shortcuts were either broken or completely absent. Google is yet to officially announce this change (as well as exactly when the Italian launch is set for). We expect that to happen sooner than later. Via View the full article
  10. If you are an Android Auto user, you must be knowing that it's not possible to use the phone when it's connected to Google's in-car infotainment service. Well, that's changed now, as the company has lifted this restriction. Yes, now you can just swipe up and unlock your phone even when it's connected to Android Auto. Google says the change is aimed at allowing passengers to use the phone (without causing any distraction to the driver). Not only that, even drivers can use their phone now when the car isn't in motion What do you think about this new change? Do you feel it's helpful?... View the full article
  11. Members over at XDA Developers have made progress with the newest Samsung handsets. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were the first Samsung handsets to come with Android Oreo out of the box. This means that they are also the first to be compatible with Project Treble. Simply put, Project Treble's purpose is to separate the core of Android OS from the OEM's modifications to address the wild issue of firmware fragmentation that has plagues Android devices since the platform's initial existence but is best exemplified by Samsung taking very times to update its flagship phones with major... 12. During the MWC, alcatel - TCL's own smartphone brand announced a bunch of new devices, including the company's first smartphone to run Android Go - a leaner version of Android designed to run on lower-end hardware. This Android Go-powered phone is called the alcatel 1X. For the record, Android Go was renamed to Android Oreo (Go Edition). Given the price and specifications of the aclatel handset, we were unsure if we were going to see the alcatel 1X arrive to the United States. alcatel confirmed to The Verge that it was going to bring two new alcatel smartphones tot the US: the aclatel 1X... 13. Sony's Xperia XZ2 got announced at MWC last month, and went up for pre-order in parts of Europe last week. If you're looking to pre-order one in the UK, both Carphone Warehouse and Three are giving you a free PlayStation 4 gaming console. If you already have one of those, you can choose to get the PlayStation VR Starter Pack for free instead. What's more, Sony is also throwing in a full year of PlayStation Plus, and this part of the deal applies even if you buy an XZ1, XZ1 Compact, or XZ Premium. The XZ2 will become available in the UK on April 6, and you have until then to decide... View the full article
  14. AR Emojis are one of the features Samsung was pushing at the launch event for the Galaxy S9 and S9+, because it simply had to respond to Apple's Animoji somehow. And now you get some new characters to play with if you enjoy AR Emoji-ing yourself. Mickey and Minnie Mouse are available, and right on time as today is the official release day for the S9 duo. Samsung says Disney characters are coming to life in an augmented reality setting for the first time ever. You can download Mickey and Minnie from the AR Emoji mode inside Samsung's Camera app. But wait, there's more! Other... View the full article
  15. As some of you might remember, prior to MWC, there were numerous hints that Sony will release a total of three new flagships at the show. Obviously, that didn't come to pass and eager fans are still an Xperia XZ Pro or perhaps XZ2 Pro short. It was supposed to be the ultimate flagship offer, complete with a 5.7-inch OLED touchscreen of 4K resolution and a 'tall' 18:9 aspect ratio. Nothing is certain quite yet, but clues have been amassing lately that the Pro's release is nearing. Starting with a trio of FCC reports, with the following IDs: PY7-24118Q, PY7-21831A and PY7-00718V.... View the full article
